Are you planning a visit to Camp Lejeune to spend time with your loved ones who serve in the military? Witnessing your service member in action is an exciting experience filled with rare opportunities. Maybe you can take a tour to gain insight into their daily routine, or explore the rich history through on-base memorials and some bases even have museums.

On-base amenities have much to offer, from scoring fantastic bargains at the PX to enjoying a game of bowling or catching a movie at the theater (often at half the price of AMC theaters!). These activities are typically within a short drive of each other or conveniently located in the same strip on the base.

Yes, a trip to a military base can be a unique experience, but there are some essential things you should know to make your visit smooth and enjoyable. Here are the top five things you need to be aware of:

1. Know the Right Gate to Enter

Military bases have multiple entry gates, but only one or two will have a proper visitor center where you can obtain a visitor pass. Before heading to the base, do your research and find out which gate you should use. Attempting to enter through the wrong gate without your sponsor could lead to delays or being turned away. Typically, the main visitor center is where you can independently obtain a day pass. For passes lasting longer than a day, your sponsor must accompany you to obtain the pass. While other visitor centers exist on base, it is usually only the main one that permits obtaining a day pass without your sponsor physically present.

2. Obtain the Correct Visitor Pass

When you secure a visitor pass for a military base, you're not only gaining access to the base but also the ability to enter without your sponsor. This is particularly important because your sponsor may have work commitments during your visit and can't always accompany you each time you enter the base.

The type of visitor pass you can obtain depends on the base and branch you're visiting. Different bases offer different lengths of passes, ranging from day and week passes to month passes. Make sure you know how long you'll be staying so you can request the appropriate pass. Having the right pass not only ensures seamless entry but also grants you the freedom to explore the base independently, making your visit more flexible and enjoyable.

3. Sponsor Required for Shopping

While having a visitor pass allows you to move freely around the base, you'll still need your sponsor (the service member you're visiting) with you when shopping at certain locations, such as the main exchange (similar to a mall) and the commissary (grocery store). However, you can make purchases without military identification at places like the food court, fast-food drive-thrus, and gas stations.

4. Be Prepared for Spotty Cell Reception

One thing to keep in mind when visiting a military installation is that cell phone reception can be inconsistent due to security measures, concrete buildings, and remote locations. It's wise to have a backup plan for communication. Consider using apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, which allow you to make calls over Wi-Fi. Also, set up offline map directions while you still have reception to avoid getting lost on base.

5. NEVER Drink and Drive on Base

This is a critical rule to remember when visiting any military base. The military standard of impairment is much lower and they are way harsher about the penalties. If you are pulled over with even with less than 0.08 of alcohol content in your system, it is within the Military Police discretion to charge you. At night, random breathalyzer checks are not uncommon at the gates. The consequences for violating this rule can be severe, and it can also get your sponsor in a lot of trouble with their unit. Play it safe and designate a sober driver, even if you've only had just one drink a couple of hours before.

Visiting your loved ones on a military base can be a memorable experience, and being aware of these key points will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit while respecting the rules and regulations of the base. Don't forget to make the most of the amenities available at the base you're visiting; they often provide detailed information through official websites and various Facebook pages and groups. For example, if you're heading to Camp Lejeune, MCCS is a valuable resource for directions, general information, upcoming events, education, and more.
